NSFAS Urges Students to Settle Accommodation Allowances with Landlords. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has issued an important call to all South African students who have received their NSFAS accommodation allowance. Students are being urged to urgently pay outstanding rental fees to their landlords using the R10,800 that was specifically allocated for accommodation purposes.

Clarification on the R13,800 Disbursed to Students

On 4 April, NSFAS disbursed a payment of R13,800 to qualifying students. Out of this total, R10,800 was earmarked for accommodation, while the remaining amount was intended for other living expenses. However, misunderstandings and confusion arose regarding the purpose and breakdown of the payment.

According to NSFAS, full remittances were made to tertiary institutions, and the accommodation allowance was to be utilised solely for housing-related expenses. Students who are staying in NSFAS-accredited accommodation are now being called upon to ensure these funds reach their intended destination – their landlords.

Importance of Proof of Payment

To streamline the verification process, students are required to submit proof of payment to their respective Financial Aid Officers at their institutions. This will help ensure transparency and accountability in the use of funds disbursed by NSFAS. Institutions are also being encouraged to work closely with students to facilitate the process and avoid potential disruptions to student accommodation.

Understanding the Allocation Process

The distribution of the NSFAS accommodation allowance is based on a verified list of students submitted by Solution Partners (SPs). These partners compile names of students who have applied for either transport or accommodation through the scheme. Once the institutions confirm eligibility, funds are released accordingly.

However, in some cases, students who were not on the verified list received the funds due to delays in institutional confirmations. This has resulted in some students receiving direct payments without formal verification of their accommodation eligibility.

Urgent Action Required from Students and Institutions

Effective from 10 April, NSFAS has requested all institutions to immediately notify students living in NSFAS-accredited student accommodation to prioritise settling their rental payments. This is to prevent potential eviction or disputes between students and landlords.

In addition, NSFAS is calling on the Student Representative Council (SRC) and other student organisations across South African tertiary institutions to play a supportive role in this initiative. Their collaboration is vital in ensuring students act responsibly and utilise the funds for their intended purpose.
