1.8 Million SASSA Grant Beneficiaries. More than 1.8 million SASSA grant beneficiaries have successfully moved from the old gold cards to the new Postbank Black Cards. The large-scale migration comes as Postbank continues its efforts to replace the previous cards used by social grant recipients across South Africa.
According to Postbank, more than 80% of its targeted card migrations had been completed ahead of the 31 August 2026 deadline. The bank said the process was progressing well and that beneficiaries who had already received their new black cards were experiencing greater convenience.
The card replacement programme has been supported by a nationwide awareness campaign and the availability of replacement points at popular retail stores. This has made the process easier, particularly for beneficiaries living in rural areas.
SASSA Black Card Migration Progress
Postbank has been working to ensure that SASSA beneficiaries move from the old gold cards to the new black cards without unnecessary disruption.
The bank said provinces that previously recorded lower migration numbers, including Eastern Cape, Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, experienced an increase in the number of beneficiaries completing the process during the final stages of the migration campaign.
Most beneficiaries receiving Older Persons Grants and Disability Grants had already completed their migration. However, Postbank reported that many beneficiaries who were still using gold cards were receiving Child Support Grants.
According to the bank, Child Support Grant beneficiaries represented as much as 90% of those who had not yet migrated. Many of these beneficiaries are younger mothers who may have greater mobility and different shopping routines.
Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thami Cele said the bank’s migration plan remained on schedule and encouraged beneficiaries who had not yet changed their cards to complete the process.
Extended Weekend Hours for Card Replacement
To help beneficiaries who had not completed the migration, Postbank extended the operating days of selected card replacement locations.
Card replacement sites were made available on Saturday and Sunday from 09:00, giving beneficiaries additional opportunities to collect their new cards.
The extended hours were particularly important for people who could not visit a replacement site during normal working hours. Beneficiaries were encouraged to use the additional time instead of delaying the card replacement process.
Although the migration deadline was set for 31 August, Postbank confirmed that beneficiaries who missed the deadline would not automatically lose their social grants.
Their accounts would remain active, and Postbank would continue providing assistance at card replacement locations after the deadline.
Where Can SASSA Beneficiaries Get the Black Card?
SASSA beneficiaries can complete the card migration process at selected Postbank card replacement sites located inside participating retail stores.
Available retailers include:
- Shoprite
- Checkers
- Usave
- Pick n Pay
- Boxer
- Spar
Beneficiaries can use the *120*355# USSD service from a cellphone to locate a nearby card migration site.
The card replacement process is free of charge. Beneficiaries generally need to present a valid South African ID or temporary ID when collecting the new card. Postbank has also stated that beneficiaries do not need to complete additional forms for the migration.
Can You Collect the Black Card in Another Province?
Yes. Beneficiaries do not necessarily have to collect their new Postbank Black Card in the same province where their SASSA grant was originally approved.
A beneficiary can collect the replacement card in another province if necessary. This can be useful for people who have temporarily relocated, are travelling, or are living away from their original registration location.
Does the New Postbank Black Card Work Immediately?
The new Postbank Black Card can be used immediately after it has been issued. Beneficiaries do not need to visit a SASSA office separately to activate the card.
This is intended to make the transition from the old gold card to the new card as simple as possible and reduce unnecessary visits to government offices.
What Happens to Money on the Old Gold Card?
Beneficiaries do not need to worry about losing money that was already available on their accounts.
Postbank stated that any available balance associated with a beneficiary’s gold card account would remain accessible after the migration to the new black card.
Beneficiaries should therefore continue using their account as instructed and follow the card replacement process when they are ready.
What If You Missed the 31 August Deadline?
Missing the 31 August 2026 deadline does not mean that a beneficiary automatically loses their SASSA grant.
Postbank confirmed that beneficiary accounts would remain active after the deadline and that card replacement services would continue to assist people who had not yet completed the migration.
However, beneficiaries are still encouraged to replace their old gold cards as soon as possible. Completing the migration helps ensure that they can continue accessing their grant payments using the new card and take advantage of its updated features.
Why the SASSA Black Card Migration Matters
The transition to Postbank’s Black Card is an important change for millions of social grant beneficiaries. The replacement programme aims to provide beneficiaries with a modern payment card while maintaining access to their social grants.
The availability of replacement locations inside major retailers has also made the process more convenient. Instead of travelling long distances to a dedicated office, many beneficiaries can complete the process while visiting a store they already use.
This approach is especially useful in rural communities, where access to financial services may be more limited.
