NSFAS Releases Private Accommodation. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has officially confirmed that payments for private student accommodation have been released to landlords who provide housing for NSFAS-funded university students. This announcement brings relief to thousands of students and accommodation providers across South Africa after weeks of uncertainty regarding delayed payments.

Many landlords had previously warned that they might stop accommodating NSFAS-funded students if outstanding payments were not settled. With the latest payment release, NSFAS aims to restore confidence among accommodation providers while ensuring students continue to have access to safe and secure housing throughout the academic year.

NSFAS Confirms Accommodation Payments Were Released

According to NSFAS, payments for private student accommodation were successfully released on Thursday, 7 May 2026. The organization explained that accommodation providers banking with First National Bank (FNB) receive payments almost immediately after the funds are processed.

Providers using other banking institutions may notice slight delays due to standard interbank processing procedures. NSFAS assured stakeholders that these delays are normal and do not indicate any issues with the payment process.

The payment release is expected to ease financial pressure on landlords who rely on timely reimbursements to manage operational expenses and continue offering accommodation to students.

More Than R1.1 Billion Paid This Quarter

NSFAS revealed that during the current quarter, it processed three major accommodation payment disbursements valued at more than R1.1 billion.

These payments have supported over 100,000 NSFAS-funded students living in approved private accommodation across South Africa. The funding ensures that students can continue their studies without worrying about losing their housing because of delayed payments.

The latest disbursement demonstrates NSFAS’ commitment to improving the financial support system for students while strengthening relationships with accommodation providers.

Majority of Accommodation Providers Successfully Verified

NSFAS announced that approximately 95% of accommodation providers listed on its solution partner portals have successfully completed the banking verification process.

As a result, these providers are now fully integrated into the direct payment system for 2026, allowing payments to be made more efficiently.

For the remaining providers whose banking details have not yet been verified, NSFAS said it is conducting individual engagements to complete the verification process and ensure they are included in future payment cycles.

This verification process is designed to improve payment accuracy and reduce administrative delays.

Monthly Payment Schedule Introduced

To make accommodation payments more predictable, NSFAS confirmed that accredited accommodation providers will now receive a monthly payment disbursement schedule.

The organization also reminded landlords and accommodation providers to meet all required documentation requirements before payments can be processed. These include:

  • Confirming each student’s NSFAS funding status.
  • Submitting valid and signed lease agreements.
  • Ensuring all accommodation accreditation requirements have been met.

Meeting these requirements will help prevent unnecessary payment delays and improve the overall efficiency of the system.

NSFAS Takes Full Responsibility for Accommodation Payments

NSFAS explained that from the beginning of 2026, it became legally responsible for managing accommodation payment functions internally.

This transition represents a significant change in how accommodation funding is administered. According to NSFAS, bringing the payment process in-house has already helped resolve several long-standing challenges affecting students and accommodation providers.

The organization believes this new system will create greater accountability and improve payment consistency across the country.

Challenges Addressed by the New Payment System

NSFAS identified several issues that have already been addressed through its updated accommodation payment process.

These improvements include:

  • Reducing delays caused by universities taking longer to confirm funded students.
  • Correcting cases where students were incorrectly classified as transport allowance beneficiaries instead of accommodation beneficiaries.
  • Improving clarity around accommodation accreditation requirements.
  • Enhancing communication between NSFAS, universities, and accommodation providers.

These changes are expected to reduce administrative errors and ensure eligible students receive the correct financial support.

Ongoing Challenges for Accommodation Providers

While significant progress has been made, NSFAS acknowledged that accommodation providers continue to face several operational challenges.

These include increasing utility costs, rising maintenance expenses, and ongoing municipal service delivery issues that affect student residences in many parts of South Africa.

NSFAS recognized that these financial pressures make timely accommodation payments even more important for landlords who provide housing to students.

NSFAS Commits to Long-Term Improvements

The financial aid scheme confirmed that it will continue working closely with accommodation sector associations and solution partners to improve the payment system.

Among its priorities are:

  • Finalising the official 2026 accommodation rental rates.
  • Creating a more transparent and predictable payment process.
  • Resolving outstanding payment issues on a case-by-case basis.
  • Strengthening cooperation with accredited accommodation providers.

NSFAS also encouraged any accommodation provider experiencing payment difficulties to contact the organization directly so that individual cases can be investigated and resolved as quickly as possible.

Support for Students Remains a Priority

NSFAS emphasized that supporting students remains at the center of its mission. Reliable accommodation payments help ensure students can focus on their education without the stress of housing uncertainty.

The organization thanked accommodation providers for their continued partnership and patience during the transition to the new payment system. NSFAS reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining long-term stability, improving administrative efficiency, and protecting the wellbeing of all NSFAS-funded students.

Conclusion

The release of NSFAS private accommodation payments marks an important step toward improving financial support for students and strengthening relationships with accommodation providers across South Africa. With more than R1.1 billion distributed to support over 100,000 students, the organization is making significant progress in addressing previous payment challenges. As NSFAS continues refining its direct payment system, monthly payment schedules, and provider verification processes, students and landlords can expect a more reliable, transparent, and efficient accommodation funding system throughout 2026.
