How Much University NSFAS Allowances Will Be For April 2026. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a lifeline for thousands of South African university students, ensuring access to higher education without financial burdens.

As students prepare for the 2026 academic year, many are eager to know how much their NSFAS allowances will be for April 2026.

NSFAS provides bursaries and student loans to eligible learners enrolled in accredited universities and TVET colleges. These bursaries cover essential costs, including tuition fees, registration fees, accommodation, food, learning materials, and transport. Allowances are distributed over ten months, from February to November.

How Much University NSFAS Allowances Will Be For April 2026

Learning Materials Allowance

The learning materials allowance is a once-off payment provided at the beginning of the academic year. This ensures that students have the necessary textbooks and stationery. For 2026, the allowance is as follows:

  • Students in Catered Residences: R5 678
  • Students in Non-Catered Residences: R5 678
  • Students with Disabilities (Catered and Non-Catered Residences): R6 240
  • Students Receiving a Transport Allowance: R5 678
  • Students with Disabilities Receiving a Transport Allowance: R6 240

Accommodation Allowance

Accommodation allowances are disbursed monthly over 10 months. Students who do not receive an accommodation allowance qualify for a transport allowance instead. Below are the accommodation allowance amounts for 2026:

  • Catered Residence (Metro Areas): R6 599
  • Catered Residence (Non-Metro Areas): R5 663
  • Non-Catered Residence (Metro Areas): R5 200
  • Non-Catered Residence (Non-Metro Areas): R4 264
  • Students with Disabilities (Catered Residence, Metro Areas): R6 963
  • Students with Disabilities (Catered Residence, Non-Metro Areas): R6 027
  • Students with Disabilities (Non-Catered Residence, Metro Areas): R5 200
  • Students with Disabilities (Non-Catered Residence, Non-Metro Areas): R4 264

Living Allowance

The living allowance is paid to certain categories of students for 10 months. This allowance assists with daily expenses such as food and basic needs. The allowances are as follows:

  • Students with Disabilities (Catered Residence, Metro Areas): R1 716
  • Students in Non-Catered Residences (Non-Metro Areas): R1 716
  • Students with Disabilities (Non-Catered Residences, Metro Areas): R2 080
  • Students with Disabilities (Non-Catered Residences, Non-Metro Areas): R2 080
  • Students Receiving a Transport Allowance: R1 716
  • Students with Disabilities Receiving a Transport Allowance: R2 080

Travel Allowance

For students who do not reside in university accommodation, NSFAS provides a monthly transport allowance. In April 2026, students receiving this allowance will get R819 per month.

Personal Care Allowance

This is an additional allowance provided only to students living in catered residences. In 2026, the personal care allowance remains at R316 per month.

NSFAS Loans for University Students

Students funded through an NSFAS loan instead of a bursary will receive only an accommodation allowance and a learning materials allowance. These students do not qualify for additional allowances such as food, personal care, or travel allowances.

How Will NSF AS Allowance Payments Be Made in April 2026?

In 2024, NSFAS announced a major shift in the way allowances are paid. Initially, NSFAS intended to use a direct NSFAS Bank Account for payments, but due to legal challenges, this plan was not implemented. Instead, NSFAS has continued using universities to disburse student allowances.

For 2026, universities will continue to pay NSFAS allowances directly to students until further notice. Each university may have its own method of disbursing funds, so students are encouraged to visit their institution’s financial aid office to confirm the payment process and ensure they receive their funds on time.

Conclusion

For many South African students, NSFAS plays a critical role in ensuring access to higher education. Understanding the structure of NSFAS allowances for April 2026 is essential for financial planning. With the learning materials, accommodation, living, travel, and personal care allowances, NSFAS continues to provide much-needed financial support.
